Possible New Scout Troop at Nettlebed

There will be an open evening at Nettlebed Community Hall on Tuesday 29th November from 1830 to 2030 for prospective new Scout Troop members. This is with a view to reopening the 1st Nettlebed Scout Group.

New Treasurer and other changes

Sarah Adams has been welcomed as the new District Treasurer.

Martin Strong has temporarily taken over as District Commissioner while a new appointee is sought. The district is also looking for a new Assistant District Commissioner (Cub Scouts) to replace Peter Phillips when he takes a well-earned 'retirement' in June.

Numbers rise in Annual Census

For the second consecutive year, membership of Scout Groups in the South Chiltern district has risen. The latest census return shows an increase of 4.3% in overall membership.

District's President Dies

The District's President died in December after a long illness. John Bowles had been involved in Scouting for almost 70 years. He was a Wolf Cub in the 3rd Henley Group before joining 1st Henley Scouts in 1941. He became an Assistant Scout Master in 1947 and took over as Scout Master in 1956.

As a Leader, John also held the position of Assistant District Commissioner (Scouts), was acting District Commissioner and served two terms on the National Scout Board. He retired as a warranted Leader in 1984. Thereafter John remained active in Scouting as District Chairman, stepping down in 2007 before being invited to become District President.

His dedication was acknowledged with the award of the Silver Wolf.

New District Commissioner

Jeremy Brett, formerly Group Scout Leader of 1st Henley, has been appointed as the new Disrict Commissioner for the South Chiltern District. Martin Strong, the previous District Commissioner, has taken on the role of Assistant District Commissioner (Scouts). Martin has already tasted success through the 1st Stoke Row Scout Troop's win in the county cooking competition.

Cub Scouts’ News

Many Cub Scouts and their parents attended the Chief Scout Silver awards at Wantage on 7th November.

South Chiltern’s Cub Scout Leaders took part in the Bracken Challenge on Friday 20th November. This is a county competition in the form of a quiz evening. It took place at Witney Lakes Golf Club. South Chiltern came second, the event being won by West Oxon. There were approximately ten teams.

District 6-a-side football was held on Saturday 21st November at Shiplake College. Sonning Common Pack won the event.

New climbing eqipment

The District has purchased new climbing equipment. Leaders should contact Alan Howard if they would like to arrange a climbing evening.

Martin Dawes has taken over as District Badge Secretary.

District Treasurer retires

The District's Honorary Treasurer, Henry Lewis, received a thank you gift at 1st Henley's centenary barbecue after 27 years service.

Another Census Increase

The number of members in the South Chiltern District has increased for the third year in a row. During 2007, numbers increased by 11%.

The 1st Henley-on-Thames Scout Group celebrates its centenary this year.
